In a quiet village near Gulu, in northern Uganda, there lives a remarkable man whose story has captured the imagination of many. His name is Julius Okello, and at 123 years old, he remains remarkably strong, active, and in excellent health. People from all walks of life, including neighbors, family members, and local journalists, often visit to witness his vitality firsthand.
As you walk through the village, you’ll find Julius working on his small farm, spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and sharing stories with anyone who takes the time to listen.
The question on many minds is how someone could live so long and stay so energetic, especially in a world where reaching 80 is already considered an impressive milestone. According to Julius, his secret lies in a mix of discipline, a healthy lifestyle, and spiritual wisdom.
Born in 1902, Julius grew up in a Uganda that was very different from today. His early life was centered around farming, walking long distances, and consuming a diet rich in fresh, unprocessed foods.
He recalls that from a young age, he learned the value of eating locally grown vegetables, fruits, grains, and fish from nearby rivers. Meat was a rare treat, enjoyed only on occasion.
He also spent much of his youth walking, helping his parents with farm tasks, and fetching water from distant sources. Julius believes that staying physically active is key to his longevity. “Your body needs to move,” he often says. “Sitting too long weakens you.”
