Preparations are underway at Muni University in Arua City to hold the eighth graduation in which a total of 481 students are expected to be awarded certificates, diplomas, bachelor’s degrees, postgraduate diplomas and Masters degrees from various disciplines.
Associat Prof Simon Katrine Anguma, the Vice Chancelor of Muni University congratulated the graduands for successfully completing their academic programs.
Prof Anguma disclosed in a press briefing on Monday that 35 of the graduands will walk away with diplomas, 201 with bachelor’s degrees, 48 with Post-graduate Diplomas, 65 with Masters Degrees and a unique 129 candidates have obtained Certificate in Higher Education access.
Certificate in Higher Education access which the government has recommended to change to Higher education Access Programme is a bridge programme introduced for students who failed to obtain two passes or enough points to qualify for direct university enrolment.
The candidates for Masters programmes studied Masters in Business Administration, Masters in Tourism and Hospitality Management, Masters of Science and Artificial Intelligence, Masters of Computer Science, Masters in Chemistry, Masters in Mathematics, Masters in Biodiversity Conservation, Masters in Public Health and Masters in Climate Change and disaster risk management.
This is a six-fold increase from the pioneers of the first graduation in 2017 when only 77 graduands were passed out.
Prof Anguma said this demonstrates that Muni University is growing from strength to strength and the university management is pushing forward with plans to increase the infrastructure, staffing and student enrolment.
“In 2014, we started with one faculty and that was the Faculty of Techno-science, now we have six Faculties,” he said.
The additional faculties are the Faculty of Education, Faculty of Agriculture and Environmental Science, Faculty of Management Science, Faculty of Health and Faculty of Science.
Prof Anguma said they want to take the number of faculties to ten in the next five years by adding the faculty of Law, faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Engineering and Technology and the Faculty of Social Science.
In another sign of organic growth of the university academic programs, Prof Anguma noted that from two programs in 2014, the Muni University now has 34 accredited programs and they plan to increase the number to 90 programs.
It is expected that this will take the student enrolment from the current 3,143 to 7,000 in five years and eventually to 10,000 students, which itself will be a giant leap from 87 pioneer students in 2014.

“The potential is there and the interest in Muni University’s programmes is growing. Sometimes we feel sorry for qualified students who apply but we decline to enroll them due to our limited holding capacity and the quest to adhere to quality assurance measures,” explained Prof Anguma.
He also highlighted that the staffing level of the university has increased from 32 in 2014 to 306, but this staffing is a paltry 24.4% of what the Muni University needs to function optimally.
Accordingly, the university is eyeing the neighboring Barifa forest for possible expansion of the main campus. This will be a 650 hectare addition to the 140 acres that was provided by the National Teachers College.
Muni University also has 2,600 acres in Madi-Okollo district which from next year shall be used for training agriculture students who must know how to properly plough using a tractor.
There is 130 acres of land in Paroketo in Pakwach district that shall be used for establishing the school of tourism and hospitality, the 400 acres land in Bidibidi which currently has been used by the UNHCR for settling refugees will be turned into the faculty of agroforestry.
Koboko district has also availed 20 acres of land to Muni University to establish the faculty of Law in memory of the former Speaker of Parliament and attorney general the late Francis Ayume. And in Moyo district, the former Erepi Teachers Training College will be repurposed to host the Bachelors in Primar Education under Muni University.
