My name is Grace, and I live in Jinja, Uganda. I have known Ssemakula since he was young, and I have always admired his perseverance. For many years, however, life was extremely tough for him. Ssemakula cannot speak English, and he never had the chance to pursue formal education.
Many in our community thought he would never make it because of this. Growing up, he struggled with basic jobs, and even trying to start small businesses was challenging. Every effort seemed to end in failure, and many friends and neighbors doubted that he would ever achieve success.
Despite these obstacles, Ssemakula never gave up. He worked relentlessly, experimenting with various businesses and hustles, from selling items in the local market to running small transport services. Some days brought only a few coins, and other days he lost everything.
I remember seeing him sit under the scorching sun at the market, counting his meager earnings, carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders.
