Xavier Becerra, the Secretary for the US Department of health and human services, has commended President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni of Uganda over his successful fight against Ebola. He used his leadership skills to turn around the earlier predicated catastrophic tide of the virulent disease.
“It is my pleasure to welcome you to the United States of America for the US-Africa leaders’ Summit and the ministerial meeting where we shall discuss cooperation between our various regions. Thank you to Mr President Museveni for your leadership during the recent Ebola outbreak and for your role in turning the tides on the outbreak”, he said.
Speaking at the ministerial session on health cooperation on the sidelines of the US-Africa Leaders’ Summit in Washington DC Tuesday (December 13), the secretary for the US department of health and human services, Xavier Becerra, said Museveni used his leadership skills to turn around the earlier predicated catastrophic tide of the virulent disease.
He added that the US and African states share a strong relationship in health.
“Together, we have tackled HIV and AIDs, Tuberculosis and Malaria, among others, including the acceleration for universal coverage.
“This summit is an opportunity to build on that partnership,” he added, noting that urgent investment in health workers in Africa should be a major focus in the coming years in order to build capacity.
“Now, today, we are announcing $250m new funding to address the COVID-19 pandemic in Africa,” he said, calling upon leaders on the continent to create strong health systems that can save the population from the devastating effects of epidemics.
A strong healthcare system, he added, builds a strong response foundation whenever pandemics strike.
Thank you President Museveni for leading Ugandans in health matters. We thank the Americans for recognising your leadership.
